Well ladies July is finally here! Well…it’s almost here, give or take a day. Certain thoughts begin enter your mind. You begin thinking about, and enjoying in advance your new found freedoms and if you’re like me, making mental checklists of things you want and need to do before you go off to college in the fall. I believe that one of those “important” checklists that every girl makes consists of what items she will add to her wardrobe now that she is a college girl. I know from experience that the hardest part of packing for college is deciding which clothes to bring with you now that you are a mature, sophisticated young adult and how exactly you’re going to fit all of these clothes in your dorm room once you’ve made your final selection. It’s stressful, I know but I believe I have the answer to your prayers. I’ve put different pieces together in my personal wardrobe that can be both functional and stylish while conserving space. Here are my tips for creating the perfect functional (and fashionable!) college wardrobe:
Tip #1: Stock Up On The Basics
What I mean by “basics” is actually very simple. Based on what you already own, assess different pieces in your wardrobe about two to three weeks before move in day. Take note of pieces like leggings, solid color scoop necks, v necks, crop tops, cardigans, and tank tops that you have an excess of and pieces you don’t have enough of. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to make a different outfit centered around basic white v neck or tank top. I always try to buy lots of my basics from stores like Forever 21 because they’re cheap and if I mess them up, I’m okay with it. After I buy what I like to call my “basic basics”, I invest in higher quality basics. I love buying t-shirts from Ralph Lauren (I live in their v necks), GAP, and J. Crew. The higher quality ones can survive the washing machine without shrinking or fading and tend to last a lot longer than my basic basics. Basics are wardrobe fundamentals that never go out of style and can be used for years to come (plus they’re a life saver when you’re running late for class!).
Tip #2: Invest in a GOOD Pair of Jeans
A good pair of jeans can always save the day. They can be dressed up or dressed down, they can be worn at least two times without being washed, and they are another example of a basic that can be used time and time again yet still give a different vibe to an outfit. Whatever fit floats your boat — skinny, straight, bootcut, or boyfriend– a good pair of jeans is always functional and in style. You may be reading this and asking yourself “Why is she stressing purchasing a good pair of jeans over and over again?” My reason for this is simple. A good pair of jeans will last you longer than just your freshman year of college. These jeans may be on the pricier side but trust me, the investment is well worth it. Don’t get me wrong I have my share of jeans from Forever 21 just like the next girl but compared to jeans I’ve purchased from GAP, J. Crew, and even Levi jeans, there’s no comparison. Those J. Crew or GAP jeans will withstand the test of all nighters, dates, parties, and classes and always be there when in doubt. My advice? I recommend investing in at least two to three pairs of good jeans.
Tip #3: When in Doubt: Accessorize
Whether it’s a statement necklace, scarves, bracelets, earrings, or a beanie if you can wear it, wear it…but in good taste. Don’t get me wrong I love an arm party just as much as the next girl but don’t cross the line between tasteful and tacky. I tend to not splurge on accessories, save a few special pieces, because I always loose things. My go to stores for cheap, cute accessories are always Charlotte Russe or Forever 21. Accessories are another aspect of fashion than can make it look like you spent hours coordinating a basic outfit. Accessories like a hat or a scarf or bracelets can be a complete lifesaver when you slept through your alarm in the mornings!
ip #4: Embrace The Little Black Dress
Ah, the classics. The LBD has stood the test of time and is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe across the world. For some of us we have a LBD for every occasion, whether it be for a night out with friends, a party, a more formal occasion, professional wear, or even to wear casually. The LBD simplifies the task of putting together an outfit. It can be worn alone, or accessorized. Just throw on a pair of heels, flats, or sandals and voila! You have an instant outfit.
Tip #5: “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”
Yes, Marilyn Monroe had it right, shoes have a lot of a power. This being said, invest wisely. I made the mistake of being lazy every day my first month of college and wearing nothing but flip flops around campus and trust me, I paid for it later. My advice is to invest in a couple of pairs of timeless staple shoes these could be flats, a pair of boat shoes (Sperry’s are a personal favorite of mine), or on days you want to dress your look down a pair of tennis shoes or sneakers and when the weather gets cooler, you can expect to find me wearing my favorite pair of riding boots.
Tip #6: Invest in a Pair of Rain Boots
Let’s face it, you’re a most likely broke college student, and gas prices are constantly changing. This being said, you probably won’t find yourself driving around campus just to go to class, even if it’s raining. That’s why I recommend investing in a pair of rain boots. Besides being functional, rain boots can be worn with virtually any outfit and still look cute. There have been many days where even though I had my umbrella when caught in the rain, I would arrive to class with wet shoes, socks, and feet. It’s rather uncomfortable sitting in class for an hour and a half like that. So to avoid the discomfort, look for a pair of rain boots that you feel you’d be able to love and that will keep you warm and dry. I will definitely be investing in this pair of Hunter boots this fall!
Tip #7: You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile
This is my final (and most important) tip. Though college is a time to reinvent yourself and become the person you’ve dreamed of being your entire life, it is also a very critical time. The choices you make now will affect your future so it’s so important to be true to who you are and to follow your heart and dreams. That being said do what makes you happy and what makes you smile! Don’t let the stress you may experience get you down, always remember to take time to step back and assess the situation and take time to yourself to just breathe and enjoy yourself!
