Inspo- Vol. 1

Inspiration is everywhere. It pushes us to try new things, explore, and let’s be honest —  get our shit together. Here’s who (and what) has been inspiring me lately.

Jayla Koriyan

Yes! Jayla is one of my all time favorite YouTubers. She’s the definition of a Girl Boss and she’s a girl that has it all. She has the brains (she’ll be graduating from college this year with not one but TWO degrees in four years), she’s got the beauty, and she’s business savvy.  She even wrote a book titled Pretty and Educated available NOW. Jayla started her YouTube career making fashion videos while she was still in high school and when she went to college, she took her subscribers along with her, expanding her channel to include weekly college blogs that are let’s face it, one of my few addictions and I look forward to watching what she’s been up to every Sunday. Jayla’s bubbly, fun, and very real personalty makes her subscribers feel like she’s their real life best friend which is one of the things that drew me to her channel when I was starting college.

Micah Nicole

I first found Micah on Twitter and of course, I did some lurking. I found out she too had her own blog and really drops some knowledge in her blog posts. Micah is also a PR major and the true definition of a Girl Boss. One of her most recent blog posts focuses on why personal branding is important for college girls, no matter what you want to do post-undergrad. Check out her blog if you get the chance, I swear you won’t be disappointed!

With Love From Emalee is a blog that I’ve recently stumbled upon. Coincidentally enough, Emalee is actually from my hometown. Even more coincidentally, we both major in Public Relations. Her values and even her reasoning as to why she chose to major in PR are so similar to mine and her blog aesthetic is literally #goals.

This has been what’s been inspiring me lately. Like I said before, everyone is in need of a little inspiration because we all get stuck in a rut every now and then. I’d love to see what’s been inspiring YOU lately. Let me know in the comments or on Twitter.

How I Stay Organized – My School and Personal Lives

Hi guys! I’ve missed blogging so so soooo much you have no idea. I even felt kind of guilty for not sticking to my posting schedule for a few weeks but every now and then we have to take a step back and take care of ourselves, mentally, emotionally, and physically, which is exactly what I had to do. Part of taking care of ourselves also has to do with how organized our lives and environments are. Whether it be our rooms, our cars, our workspaces, our schedules, how we handle all of these things affects our levels of stress. So, I’ve decided to show you guys how I stay (or attempt to stay) organized.

I must plan under any circumstance

And no, I don’t mean mentally think out what I’m going to do with my day or week when the time comes. I mean physically write out what needs to get done and what I want to get done. Doing this allows me to actually see what I’m doing and if I’m actually getting things done! Plus, my Lily Pulitzer planner is adorbs so that’s an extra little perk too, right?

I also must clean as I go

I’m going to be completely honest with you guys. I’m a very OCD type of person. I like for things to be a certain way and just organized accordingly. However, I’m also very lazy and all too quickly when I look, my room/car/purse/desk/life is a mess. So before I leave the house, after or while I’m getting dressed, before getting out of the car if I see any mess I must pick it up right then and there so it doesn’t begin  to accumulate.

I schedule in “Personal Days”

Yes, you read that correctly; I schedule in “personal days”. Some of you may ask, “well what about classes?” Yes, I do have classes however, this is why I use the word schedule. Remember those packets of paper stapled together that your professor gave you at the beginning of the semester? What’s it called again? Oh, right a syllabus. Your syllabus is what is going to save you. It has all your assignment dates, test dates, class meeting dates, all ready predetermined. This being said, sometimes life gets a little crazy and you need to take a day to get your priorities back in order and get organized. Before I do this though, I consult the syllabi for all of my classes and then pick a day to take off. This is what I like to call “skipping smart”.

Well guys, this is how I stay organized, I hope this helped in some way with the Spring Semester fast approaching. What are your tips for staying organized?

Until Next Time

2017 Goals

You guys, I’m back in action! Some of my longtime followers may have noticed I took a little bit of a break from blogging and social media for a number of reasons, mainly due to the fact that I needed to take some time for me to figure out what exactly it was I wanted in life and to reassess my priorities because, duh self care is important. 2016 has been a hell of a year for me. With 2017 finally here, I’m ready to get back to the grind, so what better way to start off the year than to document and share my goals for the year.

Financial Goals

I admit it. I have a little bit of a shopping problem. Okay, I kinda just straight up lied. I have a big shopping problem. When I feel bad, I shop. When I’m happy, I shop. When I’m bored, I shop. It’s a never ending cycle. This being said, I have to cut it out. Less spending, more saving.

  • Invest

I’ve always believed in investing whether it be in myself or my closet (more so my closet), however, I want to do more than just that. I have friends that are mission minded and have their own creative ideas. Who better to invest in than your friends? We always want to put our money towards products and services provided by people we don’t even know, so why not put our money towards people we actually do know?

Academic Goals

I want a 4.0 for the semester, or no less than a 3.5. No if, ands or buts about it. Yes things do come up, but that’s no excuse for me not to be great. I know that I can pull off a 3.0 with very little effort, but why be lazy?

Career Goals

I currently have an internship working in my city’s Chamber of Commerce in the public relations department, which mainly deals with tourism. I love the work I get to do and the people I have the opportunity to meet, but I want to kind of step out of my comfort zone and explore other areas in the PR field this year.

Personal Goals

  • Make More Time for Me

I have always been the type of person to set aside my wants, for the benefit of others. That stops now. At the end of the day I have to ask myself if I am truly happy and proud of what I’ve accomplished this year, and my life as a whole. If I want that answer to be a resounding ‘yes’, then I have to focus on myself and what my goals are and what I want.

  • Plan Ahead

When it comes to managing myself I have no problem planning ahead, just in case. However, within my church I work with my cousins Brittany and Sierra in our girls ministry, working with girls between the ages of 5 and 16. We take them on outings, have small and large group workshops and discussions, as well as work on other responsibilities we have within the church. However, Brittany went off to college in August and is now in Atlanta for the majority of the year and since then, things gave been a little hectic. I feel like I can do more, I just haven’t truly sat down to plan effectively and work out how exactly I’m going to carry out my plan. This is a major goal of mine for 2017.

Blog Goals

My goals for my blog are really very limited though it’s going to take a lot of work on my part to make it so. I’d like to:

  • Brand myself more effectively
  • Gain a larger following on my social media platforms
  • Create content with more substance than fluff

Overall I feel like my goals are achievable for this year and I hope to make everything I want possible. I’m a firm believer in the phrase, “Stay down until you come up” and that’s exactly what I plan on doing this year because I want 2018 to be my cut up season. What are your goals for 2017? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to read them!

College Morning Routine

I’m a morning person…that fails at mornings. Not all the time, just some of the time. Either I oversleep, I get distracted, or I just don’t feel inspired to wake up and slay the day sometimes. Monday through Friday my classes start at 9 AM so I usually leave the house around the same time of day. However, when I am on my actual routine and totally ready to conquer whatever the day has for me, this is my morning routine.

6:45 – Alarm Goes Off

I absolutely love iOS 10’s Bedtime feature that determines what time you need to go to bed to get the desired hours of sleep you want, and gently wakes you up at your desired time. My reasoning for my alarm going off this early when I don’t have class until late morning is extensive. The main reason for my doing so is to start the process of waking myself up so I can actually get up at or around 7.

7:00 – Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

Caffeine is always needed and wanted in the morning. Self explanatory. I also always watch the news or some cartoons (on a good day) and work on either homework or blog ideas. I also check out what I’m doing for the day and plan my day out in my planner.

8:00 – Slay the Day

I start getting ready for school (teeth brushed, faced washed, getting dressed, doing makeup, you know the deal). I’ve kind of figured out if I don’t start by 8:30…I’m going to be late, no question. I also wish I was one of those people that could get everything ready the night before, but when I do, especially regarding my outfit choice I tend to change my mind the next day!

8:45 – Let’s Hit the Road!

I usually  try to leave the house within the 8 o’clock hour. I’m out the door and in the car, headed for class. Most of the time in an effort not to be late for class, I’m eating breakfast in my car.

Thanks for reading! This is my current morning routine for school! Are you a morning person? What’s your favorite part of your routine? I’d love to hear in the comments!

What’s In My School Bag: Prepped For College Series

Now that school is in session (or soon to be in session) and summer will soon be a thing of the past, it’s time for sleeping in to become sleep deprivation and the all nighters we pulled taking adventures with friends to turn into all nighters spent with coffee, notebooks and textbooks. Personally, I’m a procrastinator and I’m constantly in search of things to provide inspiration and keep me motivated to get things done. One way I like to keep motivated and inspired is to watch “What’s In My….” videos on YouTube because they weirdly make me want to keep myself organized. I started classes last week so  I decided to do a blog post around what I keep in my school bag.

What’s In My School Bag?

I have my classes every other day, meaning on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I go to certain classes and the classes I don’t go to on those days I go to on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I start my days at 8 AM and I’m usually finished with classes by early afternoon. I pack my bag according to what my schedule looks like for the day so what I keep in my bag does change but for the most part what’s included on the list are my essentials and they never leave my bag.

The notebooks I keep in my bag are based on what classes I have that day. I have a different notebook for each class. I take 12 credit hours, so I am a full time student taking four 3 credit classes.

This essential I found I needed my first semester of living on campus. Before moving into my dorm, I always used to carry a purse out of habit, but living on campus I felt it unnecessary to carry my purse if I was just going to the student union to get Starbucks or just running to Wal-Mart. Though I don’t live on campus anymore, the same principle still applies…sometimes you just don’t want to carry a purse, ya know? So one day when I was in Target picking up some things before a trip to Disney World I saw a wristlet that had an ID slot, some room for money, credit cards, and my phone and ever since, I’ve been using it. Recently I’ve upgraded to a wallet with a wristlet slot (which is also big enough to keep my phone in coincidentally) because it looks more professional and put together I keep it inside my school bag when I’m out too and it holds some cash, my debit card, credit card, driver’s license and student ID and I can attach and detach my keys if I need to!

Make Up Bag
This essential you can pretty much find in every girl’s bag. I’ll make a more detailed post on my emergency kit essentials in the very near future.

My “Oh S**t!” Bag

In life we often have moments that just make us say “oh s**t!”. Nine times out of ten we don’t know when we’re going to have these moments so we all need a bag with all the emergency essentials. Be on the look out for a more detailed post on this as well!

Pencil Case
I like to keep some mechanical pencils, highlighters and pens in a pencil bag so I can keep up with the, and so they don’t get thrown all over my bag and explode all over everything.

Phone Charger (Cord and Adapter)
I always like to have an adapter and cord for my phone, separate from the phone charger that I keep in my room plugged up next to my bed just in case I need to plug my phone into a wall outlet or my power bank dies. I have a separate cord and adapter than the one I keep in my room for two reasons, the first being that I’m notorious for loosing phone chargers and the second being that iPhone chargers aren’t always the most dependable.

I always keep my planner in my bag because I like to write down to-do lists for the day, assignments and work related events and bookings at any given time. Depending on the demand, I may put it in my phone first but it will always also be written down in my planner. I prefer to have what I like to call a “big girl” planner because they give off a sophisticated look and feel and it makes me more inclined to look at it and use it. Even though I may sound basic, my favorite planners are from Lilly Pulitzer and Kate Spade. Another brand I’m starting to warm up to is They have some really cute designs, they’re functional and they’re affordable!

For me headphones are an absolute necessity. I usually have my bluetooth headset on me that I can use to play music and answer phone calls or just the basic Apple headphones that came with my phone

So guys, this is what I keep in my school bag on a daily basis, at least the majority of the time. What are your school bag essentials?

Dorm Room Essentials: Prepped for College Series

It’s that time of year again. What time you ask? Okay, I’ll tell you even though I’m pretty sure you’re already quite familiar to what exactly it is that I’m referring to. Ready for the answer? It’s back to school time. For my high school readers, time for you to do that last minute summer reading you had three months to do. For my college readers tome for you to, if you’re like me, get your schedules done for the semester and pick up some things for your dorm room. Though this post is mainly geared towards my college aged readers, some of these items my younger readers can use in some capacity, but I’ll have another post just for you. The Fall 2014 semester was my first semester of being an actual, full time college student. By this I mean, not dually enrolled as I was in high school. Being a full time student of the university allowed me many new privileges that I wasn’t awarded the year before because I was still technically a high school student. I now had a meal plan and the biggest (and my favorite) privilege of them all, was the fact that I could now have my very own dorm room. I no longer had to live with my parents and I could come and go as a pleased. Though I lived in the same city as the school I attended, I decided that I wanted a dorm room so that I could have the full authentic “college experience”. Dorm life was very different than I what I imagined and I found that once I moved in and the semester progressed, there were certain things I found that I needed that I didn’t think to buy. So, here’s a list of my Top 10 Dorm Essentials.

Extra Sheets, Pillows, and Pillow Cases
When shopping for necessities like these always follow the “extra is better” rule. After all, you never know what will come up or when you’ll need extra sheets, pillows, or pillow cases. I found myself having my sister stay in my dorm room overnight throughout the semester and with the extra bed I had in my room, she was not about to share my XL Twin bed with me. Personally I’d recommend buying at least one extra set of each.

Trash bags
This one is kind of self explanatory and extremely practical and yet, I have no idea why I forgot to buy any before move in day. Don’t be that girl bringing 3 Target bags full of garbage out to the dumpster because you didn’t have time to make a trip to Wal-Mart or Target to get any before time for room checks.

Shower Shoes
Please, whatever you do, do NOT, I repeat, NOT forget to pick up a pair of shower shoes. They can be a pair of flip flops you got that you’re not so fond of from the Old Navy $1 flip flop sale or a cheap pair from the Dollar Store, just pick some flip flops and use them as your designated shower shoes. To my understanding many freshman dorm rooms have communal bathrooms while others don’t. If you’re unsure of your dorm’s particular arrangement it’s better to be safe than sorry. Luckily for me, my aunt put together a care package with two pairs of shower shoes, extra soap, washcloths, etc. and that my sister and I could both have a pair.

Cleaning Supplies
On move in day, be prepared to do a thorough wipe down and scrub of your dorm room. It may look clean but don’t be fooled. Colleges are full of germs and even if you’re someone who never gets sick, prepare to catch something. Be sure to stock up on bleach, Lysol wipes, and bathroom cleaning supplies.

Laundry Supplies
While I’m on the subject of personal hygiene, another major set of items overlooked in the packing and unpacking process is that of laundry supplies. Whether it be detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, you name it, don’t be that person who realizes at the last minute when they’re in desperate need to do laundry that they have none of these things.

Laundry Bag
This essential goes hand in hand with laundry supplies but is often overlooked because chances are, you won’t think about it since you probably have a clothes hamper. Personally, I prefer taking my dirty clothes down to the laundry room in this as opposed to lugging my hamper down from my room on the third floor. Laundry bags are often inexpensive and can be found at Target, Wal-Mart and even the Dollar Store.

Again, need I say any more? Stock up on things such as underwear, bras, socks, and layering tank tops before move in day. Doing this prolongs the need to do laundry just a little longer.

Additional Chargers and Cables
This essential is also kind of self explanatory. Things happen, chargers break. Never get caught without a charger, especially if you have an iPhone!

Extra Lighting

Let’s be honest, the florescent lighting in a dorm room isn’t the most flattering lighting to begin with. I suggest buying a desk lamp and maybe a floor lamp, string lights or maybe even both. In addition to creating your lighting more attractive, you’ll have the ability to be able to sneak in that late night cram session without waking your roomie and the additional lighting can make your room feel more homey and comfortable.

Under Bed Storage
At this point if you’re a new college student, you haven’t gotten the moving process down to a science like returning college students do. I have forever been an over-packer and some times I don’t even use everything I bring to school with me but I bring it anyway because you never know what will come up. This being said, my dorm room did not have the means to hold everything and still be organized. Under bed storage was a life saver. I suggest going to your local Target or Wal-Mart and purchasing one or two storage drawers like this or similar if your dorm room has your bed lofted already or purchase bed risers to make your bed sit higher.
