Inspo- Vol. 1

Inspiration is everywhere. It pushes us to try new things, explore, and let’s be honest —  get our shit together. Here’s who (and what) has been inspiring me lately.

Jayla Koriyan

Yes! Jayla is one of my all time favorite YouTubers. She’s the definition of a Girl Boss and she’s a girl that has it all. She has the brains (she’ll be graduating from college this year with not one but TWO degrees in four years), she’s got the beauty, and she’s business savvy.  She even wrote a book titled Pretty and Educated available NOW. Jayla started her YouTube career making fashion videos while she was still in high school and when she went to college, she took her subscribers along with her, expanding her channel to include weekly college blogs that are let’s face it, one of my few addictions and I look forward to watching what she’s been up to every Sunday. Jayla’s bubbly, fun, and very real personalty makes her subscribers feel like she’s their real life best friend which is one of the things that drew me to her channel when I was starting college.

Micah Nicole

I first found Micah on Twitter and of course, I did some lurking. I found out she too had her own blog and really drops some knowledge in her blog posts. Micah is also a PR major and the true definition of a Girl Boss. One of her most recent blog posts focuses on why personal branding is important for college girls, no matter what you want to do post-undergrad. Check out her blog if you get the chance, I swear you won’t be disappointed!

With Love From Emalee is a blog that I’ve recently stumbled upon. Coincidentally enough, Emalee is actually from my hometown. Even more coincidentally, we both major in Public Relations. Her values and even her reasoning as to why she chose to major in PR are so similar to mine and her blog aesthetic is literally #goals.

This has been what’s been inspiring me lately. Like I said before, everyone is in need of a little inspiration because we all get stuck in a rut every now and then. I’d love to see what’s been inspiring YOU lately. Let me know in the comments or on Twitter.

Until Next Time!

20 Things I Learned at 20

Hi guys, I’m back. As I’m enjoying my Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (and day off from school…though the semester started literally 6 days ago), I realized I’m exactly a week a way from my 21st birthday. 2016 was a crazy year for me. Amongst everything that happened within the year…I exited my teens and finally made it to what I thought was true “adulthood”. I say this critically because when I was a kid, there were so many things I wanted to have done at twenty or in my twenties. Graduate from college at 21, Married with a career at 22, kids at 23. Let’s all laugh at my cluelessness. I always thought that I would really have my life together at 20. Despite what I thought, I’m going to share what I’ve learned after completing the first year of the decade known as my Selfish Twenties.

  1. College boys aren’t so different from high school boys
  2. Sometimes all you need is your best friend and some ice cream
  3. And Sleep — Lots of Sleep
  4. It’s impossible to be friends with an ex
  5. Cutting your phone off isn’t the end of the world
  6. The world owes no one
  7. Patience is a virtue
  8. College is really for finding yourself
  9. It’s okay not to have it all figured out
  10. Don’t believe the hype — no one has their shit together
  11. It’s okay to say no
  12. Sometimes, you just have to let go
  13. Comparing your success to another’s will only make you feel worse
  14. Good things come to those who hustle
  15. Trust your gut — it’s usually right
  16. Having a big heart isn’t a curse
  17. Let yourself have a good long cry every now and then
  18. It’s okay to be alone
  19. A relationship with God is so important
  20. Never compromise your morals

Some of what I’ve learned, I had to learn the hard way, I definitely was not exempt from  stress and heartache. I’m excited to see what the twenty-first chapter of my life has in store for me and even more excited to share with you guys!

Until Next Time

2017 Goals

You guys, I’m back in action! Some of my longtime followers may have noticed I took a little bit of a break from blogging and social media for a number of reasons, mainly due to the fact that I needed to take some time for me to figure out what exactly it was I wanted in life and to reassess my priorities because, duh self care is important. 2016 has been a hell of a year for me. With 2017 finally here, I’m ready to get back to the grind, so what better way to start off the year than to document and share my goals for the year.

Financial Goals

I admit it. I have a little bit of a shopping problem. Okay, I kinda just straight up lied. I have a big shopping problem. When I feel bad, I shop. When I’m happy, I shop. When I’m bored, I shop. It’s a never ending cycle. This being said, I have to cut it out. Less spending, more saving.

  • Invest

I’ve always believed in investing whether it be in myself or my closet (more so my closet), however, I want to do more than just that. I have friends that are mission minded and have their own creative ideas. Who better to invest in than your friends? We always want to put our money towards products and services provided by people we don’t even know, so why not put our money towards people we actually do know?

Academic Goals

I want a 4.0 for the semester, or no less than a 3.5. No if, ands or buts about it. Yes things do come up, but that’s no excuse for me not to be great. I know that I can pull off a 3.0 with very little effort, but why be lazy?

Career Goals

I currently have an internship working in my city’s Chamber of Commerce in the public relations department, which mainly deals with tourism. I love the work I get to do and the people I have the opportunity to meet, but I want to kind of step out of my comfort zone and explore other areas in the PR field this year.

Personal Goals

  • Make More Time for Me

I have always been the type of person to set aside my wants, for the benefit of others. That stops now. At the end of the day I have to ask myself if I am truly happy and proud of what I’ve accomplished this year, and my life as a whole. If I want that answer to be a resounding ‘yes’, then I have to focus on myself and what my goals are and what I want.

  • Plan Ahead

When it comes to managing myself I have no problem planning ahead, just in case. However, within my church I work with my cousins Brittany and Sierra in our girls ministry, working with girls between the ages of 5 and 16. We take them on outings, have small and large group workshops and discussions, as well as work on other responsibilities we have within the church. However, Brittany went off to college in August and is now in Atlanta for the majority of the year and since then, things gave been a little hectic. I feel like I can do more, I just haven’t truly sat down to plan effectively and work out how exactly I’m going to carry out my plan. This is a major goal of mine for 2017.

Blog Goals

My goals for my blog are really very limited though it’s going to take a lot of work on my part to make it so. I’d like to:

  • Brand myself more effectively
  • Gain a larger following on my social media platforms
  • Create content with more substance than fluff

Overall I feel like my goals are achievable for this year and I hope to make everything I want possible. I’m a firm believer in the phrase, “Stay down until you come up” and that’s exactly what I plan on doing this year because I want 2018 to be my cut up season. What are your goals for 2017? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to read them!

College Morning Routine

I’m a morning person…that fails at mornings. Not all the time, just some of the time. Either I oversleep, I get distracted, or I just don’t feel inspired to wake up and slay the day sometimes. Monday through Friday my classes start at 9 AM so I usually leave the house around the same time of day. However, when I am on my actual routine and totally ready to conquer whatever the day has for me, this is my morning routine.

6:45 – Alarm Goes Off

I absolutely love iOS 10’s Bedtime feature that determines what time you need to go to bed to get the desired hours of sleep you want, and gently wakes you up at your desired time. My reasoning for my alarm going off this early when I don’t have class until late morning is extensive. The main reason for my doing so is to start the process of waking myself up so I can actually get up at or around 7.

7:00 – Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

Caffeine is always needed and wanted in the morning. Self explanatory. I also always watch the news or some cartoons (on a good day) and work on either homework or blog ideas. I also check out what I’m doing for the day and plan my day out in my planner.

8:00 – Slay the Day

I start getting ready for school (teeth brushed, faced washed, getting dressed, doing makeup, you know the deal). I’ve kind of figured out if I don’t start by 8:30…I’m going to be late, no question. I also wish I was one of those people that could get everything ready the night before, but when I do, especially regarding my outfit choice I tend to change my mind the next day!

8:45 – Let’s Hit the Road!

I usually  try to leave the house within the 8 o’clock hour. I’m out the door and in the car, headed for class. Most of the time in an effort not to be late for class, I’m eating breakfast in my car.

Thanks for reading! This is my current morning routine for school! Are you a morning person? What’s your favorite part of your routine? I’d love to hear in the comments!

My Current Skincare Routine

Hey y’all! I’m back with another post, this time writing about my current skincare routine. I know you guys just want to hear all about my dysfunctional skin right? Fab. Let’s get into it.

As a teenager I really had issues with my skin between breakouts and acne scarring from said breakouts. As I got older my skin did in fact clear up but once I hit college (especially since I’ve hit 20), the breakouts came back in the worst way possible. For the most part I have dry, combination skin and the real problems come into play in the winter and summer months with flakiness or oiliness. For years I’ve been experimenting with different products trying to find the right combination for my specific skin type and I think I’ve finally found the key.

 Makeup Removal

Let’s face it guys, I love makeup. I love doing my makeup, getting my makeup done, doing other people’s makeup, long story short, I’m a makeup junkie. Needless to say, when I come home it’s safe to assume that I have a full face of makeup on that sadly, has to come off. To do this used to be a drag and I used to do whatever I could to make the processes as short, easy…basically as lazy as possible. Makeup wipes didn’t do the job because they didn’t remove all my  makeup, makeup remover didn’t either. What I’ve found that works for me is starting with the Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser, rinsing with cold water to start removing the makeup on my face then follow up with my favorite holy grail multiuse product, coconut oil. I then leave the oil on my face for a few minutes and then go in with a warm washcloth to remove the remnants of the makeup.

This step of my skin care routine I didn’t really know what to call, to be honest. I didn’t want to include it with makeup removal because this step I do when my face is completely makeup free. Awhile back I had received the Clinique Three Step Skin Care Set for Dry Skin as a gift and even though I loved it, sometimes using everything together left my skin feeling extra dry and flakey. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking — not a good look. So instead, I pick and chose which products to incorporate in my every day routine and which to use every once in a blue moon. For the sake of this routine though, I use the Clinique Step 2 Clarifying Lotion to pick up any dead skin and I like how refreshing it makes my skin feel.

Yes! This is probably my favorite part of my skin care routine because it just makes me feel so good. Usually I exfoliate once a month for my body, twice a month for my face. However in the summer months I do this a little more frequently depending on how I’m feeling because more skin is exposed (duh). To do this, I use a hand made sugar scrub made with coconut oil and lavender essential oil.

Here it is again, coconut oil. You guys are probably going to get really tired of hearing me talk about this, but it’s just that great. Since using it, my skin has never felt more clean or soft and it’s cleared up the majority of the acne scarring I have on my face.

That’s it for my skin care routine, I try to keep everything very simplistic ’cause…who has the time for a long, complicated skin care routine? What are some of your skin care essentials? Let me know in the comments!
